DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is as old as the college itself. The Department was established in 1947. The programmes offered in the Department are: National Diploma (ND) Electrical/Electronic Engineering Higher National Diploma (HND) Electrical/Electronic Engineering On inception, various certificate programmes such as the City and Guilds of London Institute and the Senior Course of Yaba Technical were offered by the Department.

However, in 1960 the college (then known as the Yaba Technical Institute made a special appeal to the City and Guilds of London Institute for running the Ordinary Diploma Programme in Electrical Engineering Programme this was granted. The Higher National Diploma Programme started in 1963 simultaneously with the Higher Certificate of the City and Guilds of London Institute. These programme were in operation till 1969, when the City and Guilds of London institute was phased out and replaced with the Higher National Diploma.

In 1978, one-tier system was introduced which led to the award of the Nigerian National Diploma (NND). This was later jettisoned in April 1980 by a Presidential fiat due to a Nation-wide student’s protest. The two-tier system was re-introduced in 1980 and since then, the HND has been in operation till date. In 1987, the Accreditation Team for National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) in Nigeria came for the first time to the Department for Accreditation and the two programmes (HND) and (ND) were given full accreditation.

A re-accreditation Team visited the Department in 1999 and the two programme were accredited for National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical Power and Electronics Engineering Options respectively. Subsequent visits by the accreditation team resulted in full accreditation of the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes on each session.
